Important ICON 2019 Information!

With #ICON2019 fast approaching, here’s an update on the major things happening with our 27th event! While some final details are still TBC, here’s what we can tell you so far, leading with our first major announcement:

#ICON2019 will be located in the Convention Centre: after some prolonged negotiations, ICON will be moving into the Convention Centre area inside the Emperors Palace complex! #ICON2019 will be running across multiple rooms throughout the complex, providing space to each gaming event as well as a separate exhibitor stall space. Being in the Convention Centre complex also means ICON will be exposed to a greater amount of foot traffic, as we sit in the main walkways between three Emperors Palace hotels and the Emporium food court area.

Tickets: now that our location has been settled, ticket sales are the next order of business and will be going live later this week. Day passes (Sat, Sun & Mon) are R125 and full weekend passes R250.

Merchandise and Accommodation: when ticket sales go online, you’ll also be able to pre-order ICON t-shirts and hoodies, as well as add an accommodation bundle to your order. Emperors Palace have again provided a discount to stays at the Peermont Metcourt hotel, and you’ll be able to choose from 2, 3, 4 or FIVE night packages (best for those travelling to the event and want to stay for everything), for single or double occupancy. We will not be pre-selling ICON Mugs but rest assured they will be available for sale at the event.

Nightly Events: the ever popular ICON Comedy Night returns with another star-studded line-up of your favourite geek comedians, hosted by the incomparable Vittorio Leonardi, and will be running on the SATURDAY evening. Sunday evening sees the ICON Geek Quiz Night, hosted by the ‘Geek of All Trades’ podcast team, and will be available for teams of up to ten members. Registration for the event will be done online, and will open later this week so start assembling your crew!

And finally, ICON will now be declaring Friday night as LARP Night! LARP stands for Live Action Role Playing, and will take place in a dedicated venue on the Friday evening – the specifics of the LARP are still to be finalised, but you should start planning now for a full weekend of gaming fun!

WCS 2019 SA Regional Qualifier Ruleset Is Now Available!

The ruleset for this year’s World Cosplay Summit 2019 SA Regional Qualifier is now available! This ruleset provides everything you need to know about submitting your application to be part of the biggest global cosplay event, as well as a template Construction Report file you’ll need to show the judges just how you made your awesome costumes. And now there are more ways to win!

Due to high standard of the competitors at the World Cosplay Summit Championship event, we want to give South African teams as much time as possible to bring out their best when taking on the world. For the 2019 event, we will be declaring TWO (2) WCS Representative winning teams!

The team placing first at this year’s event will have the choice of representing South Africa at either the 2019 or 2020 World Cosplay Summit Championship event, with the team placing second being allocated the remaining spot. Going forward, we will be choosing teams just over a year in advance (ICON 2020 will choose the 2021 winner, etc.), giving the teams over 12 months of preparation time (and time to save for an extended holiday!).

What Is Cosplayers.Global?

Cosplayers.Global, opened earlier in 2018, is a platform designed to allow cosplayers all around the world the ability to connect and enjoy cosplay, without the language barrier that can sometimes get in the way. Creating a Cosplayers.Global profile allows you to create your own gallery, post your own cosplay recipies, celebrate character’s birthdays, and also an event tracker to let you know which cosplay events have been logged on the site.

Addtionally, Cosplayers.Global runs amazing competitions with great prizes, including the chance to attend the World Cosplay Summit Championships in Nagoya, Japan! These competitions are over and above the actual WCS competition, giving you more ways, and more chances to get to the main event!

And the best part? If you’re a Cosplayers.Global member, you’ll gain free access to any of the cosplay competitions at ICON Comics & Games Convention, which includes the WCS – South African qualifiers!

Head over to the Cosplayers.Global website and register and like them on Facebook to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the big announcements. Then keep watch on the World Cosplay Summit – Team South Africa page for all the latest local WCS news!

ICON 2019 Dates Announced

ICON CGC has some changes planned for 2019! As you may know from our updated header images, ICON CGC is making the move from our traditional mid-year anniversary to Easter. This isn’t a decision that was made on the spur of the moment – there are a number of factors the ICON Team had to consider before making the decision. Here are the reasons for the decision, and some other FAQs you may have:

a) Our partnership with Emperors Palace: the team at Emperors Palace have been fantastic in getting behind ICON CGC, and have started putting plans in place to help us grow and leverage everything they have to offer, with more information about these coming soon. The Easter holiday is also a very busy time for them, which will mean more people to come and enjoy what ICON is all about – three days of comics, gaming and cosplay fun!

b) A VERY crowded convention calendar: the last few years have seen a number of additional events call Johannesburg home (we’re sure you can think of a couple!). The fact is a crowded schedule later in the year means ICON loses out on in some ways, and we’d like to give everyone the best possible event we can. A move earlier in the year opens up other opportunities for us, including some international partnerships (more on this soon!)

c) But…. what about FanCon : Cape Town Comic Con in Cape Town? Are you guys trying to take them out?

When we were first approached about the notion of a date move, Fan Con were our first consideration. We reached out to the Fan Con team and discussed the idea, and we have received their blessing. In fact, the move actually gives both ICON CGC and Fan Con some opportunties … more on that later.

d) World Cosplay Summit (WCS): it cannot be understated – WCS is a MASSIVE global event, and we’re incredibly honoured to be a part of the WCS family. WCS runs in July/August, and a mid-year ICON event doesn’t leave a lot of time for our national winner to prepare for their trip to Japan to represent South Africa on the world stage. A move earlier in the year means more time for logistics planning for our winners … and there’ll be more information posted shortly on the World Cosplay Summit – Team South Africa page about this!

e) A tentpole event for some new gaming initiatives: the ICON team has been talking with some of our regular event partners about how we can get back to what we’re good at – running organised competitive events. Our new date gives us flexibiilty in how we can make these plans a success – more on this soon!

f) But … it’s Easter. Why would you move it to this weekend?

As you can see, there are a host of benefits to ICON in shifting the date earlier in the year, but we also recognise that this time of year is incredibly important to a number of people. We took the decision to not open on Good Friday, and rather run across the other three days of the weekend. ICON has always tried to leverage holidays, and an Easter event would make it easier for our inter-provincial guests to travel without having to take time away from work or school.

ICON CGC has gone through a number of changes in the last couple of years, all with the intent of providing a better experience for everyone – old fans and new. Our new home has opened a number of doors, and created a host of opportunities that we know will make for an exciting event. We hope you join us all for the ride!

Tickets will be on sale in time for Christmas – including our popular hotel accommodation combos!

ICON 2018 Takes SA Cosplay To The Globe With World Cosplay Summit!

It’s been in the pipeline for a while, but ICON Comics & Games Convention is now proud to announce – South Africa will be part of the global World Cosplay Summit (WCS) 2018 Championships!

Starting in 2003, in Nagoya, Japan, WCS has grown to become the leading cosplay competition around the world, with a staggering 35 regions competing. The Championship doesn’t just judge the quality of participants’ costumes, but also the art direction and overall performance as cosplayers perform actual routines where they embody their characters.

World Cosplay Summit’s Takagi Yasuhiro said “We are very happy to announce that South Africa will be participating at World Cosplay Summit 2018! It is the first participating country from Africa, and the World Cosplay Summit will become the competition that can finally say that cosplayers gather from all five continents. Find out more information on the ICON CGC website!”

ICON 2018 will serve as the first WCS event on the African continent, with the winners flying to Nagoya City at the end of July to represent SA at this incredible event. More information, including entry packs, coming soon so stay tuned!
